Child injury rates in the poorest parts of the UK are as high as those in Kazakhstan, according to a report today from the World Health Organisation. Dr Etienne Krug, director of the WHO's department of violence and injury prevention and disability, says although the UK has a good safety record, it could do more to protect young people.

The UN summit on climate change is under way in Poznan, Poland. Stavros Dimas, the European commissioner for the environment, says Europe would be prepared to become virtually carbon-free in order to secure a new deal to replace the Kyoto Protocol.
