Guardian Daily: Obama triumphs in US election

"Change has come to America," declares Barack Obama in a victory speech in Chicago. A record turnout in a historic election has given the United States its first black president.

Suzanne Goldenberg in our Washington office explains how the night unfolded, with formerly Republican strongholds such as Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia succumbing to the Democrats. And she reports from the joyous Democrats' election party in Washington. Ewen MacAskill, our Washington bureau chief, gives his perspective on what the result means.

Jonathan Freedland reports from Chicago, where President-elect Obama addressed a crowd of around 120,000 well-wishers. And listening to John McCain's concession speech in Phoenix, Arizona, is our correspondent Dan Glaister.

Just 43 years after they were enfranchised, millions of black Americans are cheering Obama's win. We hear the views of his supporters in Harlem, New York.

Diplomatic editor Julian Borger looks at how the rest of the world regards America's choice of 44th president.

Commentator Martin Kettle considers the weight of expectation on Obama, as he inherits an economy in recession and a foreign policy in chaos. Elana Schor looks at what's waiting in the Oval Office in-tray.

Production: Andy Duckworth, Tim Maby, Phil Maynard and Matt Wells in London; Francesca Panetta in Washington; Damian Kayha in New York.
