Guardian Daily: Blears quits as MPs plot to oust Brown

As voters go to the polls in today's European and local elections, dissident Labour MPs are gathering support for a push to remove Gordon Brown as party leader. Yesterday the communities secretary, Hazel Blears, delivered another blow to the prime minister by announcing her resignation - less than 24 hours after three other government colleagues revealed they were leaving. Political correspondent Allegra Stratton assesses the danger facing Gordon Brown.

In its leader column yesterday the Guardian called for Brown to step down. Our chief leader writer, Julian Glover, and the paper's head of comment, Georgina Henry, look at the likely consequences of a leadership battle for Labour and for moves to reform the UK's constitution.

In other news, Barack Obama makes a crucial speech today in Cairo, appealing for a new era of understanding between America and the Muslim world. Ian Black reports from Cairo.
