Guardian camera club: Sarah Lee's 24-hour narrative – in pictures

Guardian Camera Club: My day. Juice
Juice: I took a number of images at the start of the day. Focusing on the minutiae of getting dressed, having breakfast and washing - including a creepily close shot of a hairbrush. This image of my Berroca tablet fizzing away really appeals to me. It was coincidence that the book the glass is resting on complements the colour of the liquid. The strong morning light really makes the picture ‘pop’. Narrative wise, orange drinks can be a shorthand for morning. Photograph: Sarah Lee for the Guardian
Guardian Camera Club: Lunch in the Guardian's canteen
Lunch in the Guardian's canteen: This was taken during the ‘working’ section of the day in the canteen at the Guardian’s offices. The image is abstract, but still gives a sense of place, with the big tomato in the frame. The strong flashes of red and yellow help the image stand out. Photograph: Sarah Lee for the Guardian
Guardian Camera Club: Walking Frieda in the rain
Wet Frieda: After work, my dog Frieda has her walk. Unfortunately the morning sun had given way to torrential rain. I took this while struggling to hold the lead and the camera – but her lead entering the frame in this way creates a little more drama compositionally. The way tension in her pose, along with the sheen the rainwater gives her fur, makes this slightly more revealing than a simple ‘cute dog’ snap. Photograph: Sarah Lee for the Guardian

Wet Camden sky through glass: This view of Camden from the window of my living room is another detail of the wet, autumnal sky at dusk. It’s shot at f2.8, which renders only the immediate foreground in sharp focus, but isn’t so open an aperture that you can’t make out the shapes of the buildings and trees further away. It helps create a ‘mood’ to the set. Photograph: Sarah Lee for the Guardian
Guardian Camera Club: Bus from Camden to Kentish Town
Blurred lights at night: This image has a wide open aperture (f1.4 on a 50mm prime lens) both to allow enough light to take a photograph in a very low-light situation, but also to throw all the traffic and car lights out of focus – so they're nothing but colourful blurs. The deep gouges in the window’s Perspex make an appealing contrast to the softness of the lights, and in an abstract way they conjure images of night-time travel in the city. Guardian Camera Club: ASH gig at the Kentish Town Forum
Ash gig: My day ended at a gig at the Kentish Town Forum. If I was working I’d be in the pit at the front photographing the band, but this was a relaxing ‘off duty’ moment, and since it would seem odd to me to try to capture the band from so far back I tried to focus on the atmospheric details; the lights, the beer in a plastic cup, etc. These elements give a sense of the event without being too specific.
