Guardian Camera Club: Rob Painter on recession photography
Can Deals. Holloway Road. Trader's terminal showing the latest market prices and a great investment opportunity to help us escape the recession. Probably better off putting your money in the little jeep ride Photograph: Rob Painter/FlickrNot the final final reduction. Seven Sisters Road. With all those tight fisted dummies and 'final reductions' this sure looked like another closure. I spoke to the owner though - this won't be the final final reduction. It's just a normal endless sale Photograph: Rob Painter/FlickrGerry. Camden Road. Gerry was sat on a wall along with 3 cans of lager and was clutching a plastic bag. I stopped and we talked for half an hour during which time he covered religion and the universe (some very specific observations I couldn't do justice to here), love and women, musicals and poetry, and my poor circulation (for which he recommended pilchards). He quoted at length James Joyce, Shakespeare, the Bible and the lyrics of various musicals. Whenever a woman walked past his attention was briefly diverted; he'd throw out a mildly lascivious remark and then return to where he'd left off. He must have recited at least 100 lines of various literary works during his discourse as he segued from one subject to the next. He described himself as a bum and a poet. Funnily enough he never once mentioned the recession Photograph: Rob Painter/Flickr
