Guardian Camera Club: Pat Gregory on self portraiture

1. Carte de Visite. My Flickr badge produces a white silhouette from a group of buildings, so adding a black silhouette seemed a good start. Simple idea but was complicated to produce in camera Photograph: Pat Gregory/Flickr

2. Male and Taken. Male and taken for 29 years. Eve Arnold, on Desert Island Disks, spoke about how we (photographers), generally dislike having our portrait taken, but how five years later we grow to like the image. When I now look at a recent portrait, I know I will probably like it in five years time. So why waste five years, like it now Photograph: Pat Gregory/Flickr

3. Sadness. Torch light was projected through a vertical slit in a piece of cardboard. It illuminated my face. I rotated anti-clockwise while I rotated the camera clockwise Photograph: Pat Gregory/Flickr

5. Room with a view. I love the view from the north facing window in our bedroom, as the sun goes down in the north west. In the foreground is the hat I have worn on summer holidays for the last 15 years, my passport and my well worn thirty two year old Billingham 350 camera bag. On the wall by the bedside lamp is an overtly religious quote associated with Carl Jung Photograph: Pat Gregory/Flickr

6. The Day Job. My father, an Olympic class athlete, gave me his first national championship gold medal. He had a wry sense of humour, which I think I have inherited, and so choose to attach it to the chain of a pocket watch, so I could use it while practicing my black-magic art of Mesmerism, while I engaged in my day job Photograph: Pat Gregory/Flickr
