Guardian Camera Club: James Caws on portraiture preserving anonymity
Framed: This photo was taken a week before the others. I found it a bit more difficult than I expected and seemed to get a caught up with the, what is in my mind, typical model on park bench looking distant scenario. At home I was a little unhappy with the results of the first shoot, so went back the following weekend to have another crack. This set fulfils the brief well. It's one person shot in different ways, in one place, in a short time scale. This is just the sort of constraints we work within. In the first two pictures the subject is unrecognisable and some interest has been introduced into the pictures by use of foliage! Perhaps the palm leaf is a better, more graphic image than the branch. Number three is less successful because the subject is pretty identifiable. Four and five don't give enough of an impression of the figure but would work well as a secondary image on a spreadPhotograph: James Caws/flickrMasked: Tucked away in the bush we came across a giant palm tree next to the river which was quite unexpected. It's fanned fronds provided a nice mask effect.
