Guardian Books podcast: Fathers in literature

Karl Ove Knausgaard's frank new book about his father has outraged his own family while making him a household name in his native Norway. It's the first of a six-volume odyssey which he describes as a "biographical novel". He talks to Sarah Crown about the limits of truth and why sons can never escape the paternal shadow. Noah Hawley's latest novel surveys the history of assassination in the US in telling the story of a father's attempt to understand why his son gunned down a presidential candidate. He joins us in the studio to discuss gun crime, parental guilt and America's long troubled history of violent masculinity.

Reading list:

A Death in the Family by Karl Ove Knausgaard (Harvill Secker)
The Good Father by Noah Hawley (Hodder)
