Guardian Book Club podcast: Michael Frayn discusses Spies

This month's guest at the Guardian book club is the novelist and playwright Michael Frayn, who joined us to discuss his 2002 novel Spies.

The book is set during the second world war with elderly narrator Stephen Wheatley looking back on a summer he spent with his best friend Keith in which everything changed for him. The two boys play at being spies, imagining that German agents lurk around every corner, but when they begin following Keith's mother, secrets emerge that neither can fully understand.

Book club host John Mullan began by asking about the autobiographical nature of the novel.
