Thank you so much, readers. Our refugee charity appeal has passed the £1.1m mark.

This means that we took an astonishing £100,000 in the 24 hours after hitting the magic £1m milestone on Monday afternoon.

The proceeds of the Guardian’s We Stand Together appeal will go to six charities supporting refugees across the world: Red Cross, Migrant Offshore Aid Station (Moas), Doctors of the World, Refugee Council, City of Sanctuary and the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre.

Your generous donations will provide vital services to refugees across the world, from emergency rescue, medical aid, food and shelter to resettlement and integration.

We still have four weeks to go, so if you haven’t yet given there is still a chance to be a part of this tremendous effort. Over 10,500 people have donated so far. You can donate online here.

Reader Susie Triffitt wrote to tell us why she donated to the refugee appeal:.

From the comfort of Christmas-decorated homes the hardship of others can feel too many worlds away.

The reason I donated was because of this gap. Due to the fact we cannot see these people before us, their suffering merges into the white noise. We forget that they are people as much as we are.

What would we need in their situation? What would we want? It seems a selfish way of looking at it but we all exist truly within our own little worlds.

This reminded me of Niemöller’s poem First They Came:

The cry of the helpless to others consumed in their own worlds. I feel we must not be oblivious. We must ‘speak out’. Thank you for speaking out.
