Senseless: a still from The Road to Guantánano by Michael Winterbottom and Mat Whitecross.
Amnesty International predicted this would happen. So too did numerous lawyers, including military lawyers. In fact the only people who seem surprised by yesterday's decision to dismiss charges against two of Guantánamo Bay's inmates are the very people who put them there . The Road to Guantánamo tells us a great deal about how inmates arrived at this dreadful place and why they remain there to this day, mostly without ever being charged with anything. Made by the British director Michael Winterbottom it's a harrowing acount of the capture and subsequent treatment of three British Muslims.
When it was released last year it was criticised for being highly one-sided: for instance there is no mention of 9/11 or any convincing explanation about why these young men decided to take their vacation in the Taliban's Afghanistan. Neverthelss it's a gripping, sometimes gruesome drama. Winterbottom made it available on Video Google a while back, so if you missed it on TV, or are simply curious about yesterday's ruling, then you can see it here.
