What’s new: The southern Chinese city of Guangzhou has lifted lockdowns in 11 areas of five districts as the spread of Covid-19 eases in the city.
The 11 areas are located in the districts of Haizhu, Tianhe, Baiyun, Huangpu and Panyu and meet conditions for lifting the lockdown restrictions, said Chen Bin, deputy director of the city’s health commission.
The areas include both residential neighborhoods and workplaces, which were closed early June after Covid-19 cases were found there or in nearby areas, Chen said at a press conference Monday.
Starting Sunday, locked-down areas in Guangzhou can apply for lifting restrictions as long as they meet conditions, such as no new Covid-19 cases for 14 consecutive days and all residents testing negative over the past 24 hours, according to a statement (link in Chinese) issued by the city’s headquarters for Covid-19 control and prevention.
The background: Authorities in Guangzhou imposed “stay-at-home-orders” in 37 neighborhoods and their surrounding areas in early June due to its Covid-19 flare-up, affecting more than 140,000 residents. In addition, certain areas were subject to another order that allowed residents to enter but not leave, and “strictly” prohibited gatherings.
The city confirmed (link in Chinese) five new coronavirus cases Monday, including one locally transmitted case and four imported cases. It also reported six asymptomatic cases, all imported.
