What’s new: The Yaotai subdistrict of Guangzhou’s Yuexiu district has rolled out stricter measures to try to control an influx of cases of Covid-19 from abroad.
The subdistrict’s move comes as officials denied online rumors that the area had been sealed off after five of the province’s seven imported cases were found there.
Background: As one of China’s earliest and most-developed manufacturing and trading hubs, Guangzhou is home to a large foreign community, including many people from developing nations. The Yaotai subdistrict is home to a large community of such foreigners.
Foreigners have been treated with greater suspicion in China recently, as the number of domestically generated new Covid-19 infections drops off to nearly zero and is replaced by the newer danger of infections coming from people entering the country from abroad.
