While many developers might be tweaking their plans to avoid GTA 6, The Witcher 3 director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz isn't thinking about all that too much when it comes to launching his next game, Rebel Wolves' The Blood of Dawnwalker.
In September, indie games everywhere scurried away in horror from the surprise launch of Hollow Knight: Silksong. Clover Pit, Demonschool, and even gaming goliath Bennett Foddy's Baby Steps, all changed release dates to create some space between themselves and Team Cherry's long-awaited, A Bug's Life alternate universe.
For the AAA scene, we've seen developers say again and again that they are terrified of Grand Theft Auto 6. An analyst likened "going up against GTA 6" to "suicide". The Helldivers 2 CEO says that GTA 6 will "blot out the sun in a way that is unimaginable for the rest of us." And Saints Row's design lead claims that no open-world developer can compete with Rockstar.
Despite this, there is one open-world developer who seems completely unfazed by GTA 6's release date, whenever it may be. The Witcher 3's director, Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, is scheduled to launch his new studio's first game, The Blood of Dawnwalker, next year. In an interview with GamesRadar+, he explained that he isn't worried about launching his open-world RPG in the same year as GTA 6.
"I think that the whole industry is observing GTA, because it is the GTA," Tomaszkiewicz says. "This is the massive game with massive marketing and so on. And I mean, as a player, I'm fine with it. I will play for sure. As a developer, it's also fine. We'll see."
At least there's one developer that isn't worried about releasing a game alongside the biggest release of the decade.
