
A GTA 5 and LA Noire developer thinks Rockstar has likely rebuilt its Rage Engine, explaining why GTA 6 is taking so long to come out.
Rob Carr, a former audio engineer at Rockstar Games, had an in-depth interview with Reece "Kiwi Talkz" Reilly, in which he spoke about his time at Rockstar and what he thinks the company could be up to. Carr spoke about how he thinks you'll be able to see ideas for the upcoming title in GTA 5, citing a mission in GTA 4 being the inspiration for the multiple protagonists found in the 2013 title. Carr also explained why he thinks the next GTA game has taken so long to release.
"I know nothing about it, other than the fact that they probably will have – given the time frame of how long it's taken them to get to this stage – they've probably rebuilt the entirety of the Rage Engine." Carr says, and while he isn't involved in the development of GTA 6, he adds "That's the only thing I can say with real genuine confidence."
Carr explains, "I'll be amazed if they didn't because the architecture of technology has advanced significantly since GTA 5, which again, easy to forget, that was three generations ago. That was the last one to be released on 360 and PS3."
The Rage Engine (Rockstar Advanced Game Engine) is probably best associated with the company's massive open-world releases, but funnily enough it made its debut in Rockstar Games Presents Table Tennis back in 2006, before being used for every console Rockstar title released since (barring LA Noire). Of course, that would be a good explanation for why the game is taking so long, and given that it's been eight years since Red Dead Redemption 2 was released I wouldn't be shocked.
