'GTA 6' Download Codes in Japan Set to Expire in Just Six Months—But Why?

"Grand Theft Auto 6" download codes included with physical editions in Japan will reportedly come with an unusual expiration date.

They will only last for up to six months.

'GTA 6' Download Codes Will Have a Limited Redemption Window

According to Rockstar's support information, Japanese download codes are scheduled to stop working on May 8, 2027, just 170 days after "GTA 6" launches on November 19.

The expiration date appears to be connected to Japan's Payment Services Act, a regulation overseen by the country's Financial Services Agency.

The law requires companies selling certain types of digital codes to maintain reserved funds to protect consumers if the business were to shut down.

However, the requirement reportedly does not apply to digital products with an expiration period of less than six months. This may explain why "GTA 6" download codes distributed in Japan will have a limited redemption window.

For players, the policy means that anyone who receives an unused code will need to redeem it before the deadline. Those who wait too long could potentially lose the ability to access the game tied to the code, depending on the conditions of the specific release.

Physical 'GTA 6' Releases Appear to Be Moving Toward Digital Access

The expiration issue also highlights the new shift taking place in the video game industry. In June, Rockstar reportedly revealed that physical copies of "GTA 6" would include a download code rather than a traditional game disc.

The industry is certainly growing in reliance on digital distribution. As more games are delivered through download codes and digital storefronts, physical editions increasingly serve as a way to purchase a boxed product rather than a standalone copy of the game.

Sony has also announced plans to discontinue physical disc production for new PlayStation games beginning in January 2028, citing changing consumer preferences and broader trends in entertainment. However, the company later clarified that developers and publishers would still be able to reorder existing PlayStation discs after the production cutoff.

As a result, physical media may not disappear completely, but its role in the gaming industry could continue to decline, per GameIndustry.biz.

Dan Houser Discusses the Future of Physical and Digital Games

Former Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser has also weighed in on the ongoing debate surrounding physical and digital game releases. He has argued that companies should continue offering physical editions as long as consumers want them.

At the same time, Houser has acknowledged some of the advantages of digital distribution. Modern games can receive updates, patches, and fixes after release, giving developers more opportunities to address technical problems and improve the player experience.

Elsewhere, former Rockstar producer John Ricchio said that "GTA" would boast a "monstrous" file size at launch.
