'GTA 6' Crunch Concerns Resurface as Rockstar Games Employees Criticize Overtime, Pay Policies

There's no question that memes, new screenshots, Reddit discussions, and fan judgments are dictating how "Grand Theft Auto 6" will come out in the market. Before the big reveal in the next few months, Rockstar Games needs to face a new criticism over its workplace practices.

Members of the Rockstar Games Workers Union (RGWU) allege that excessive overtime, commonly known as "crunch," remains a significant issue despite years of public scrutiny and promises to improve working conditions.

The claims come from employees at Rockstar North in Edinburgh, who argue that long working hours have become deeply ingrained in the studio's culture.

Rockstar Employees Say Overtime Is Still Part of Studio Culture

According to developers who spoke with Game Developer, Rockstar employment contracts include an opt-out clause from the UK's Working Time Regulations.

Employees who sign the agreement can work beyond the standard legal limit on weekly hours unless they choose to opt back into those protections.

Union members say many employees were initially unaware of this option until the RGWU launched an awareness campaign explaining their legal rights.

Following those efforts, Rockstar reportedly streamlined the process by allowing staff to opt back into the regulations without first meeting with Human Resources.

Despite this change, employees claim the company still encourages extended work hours by framing them as voluntary overtime supported by financial incentives.

Critics argue that while the terminology may have changed, the culture of crunch remains largely intact.

Developers Call for Greater Pay Transparency

In addition to overtime concerns, Rockstar employees have questioned the company's compensation structure.

Developers told the news outlet that annual bonus payments can vary significantly from year to year without clear explanations. Some employees reported receiving substantial bonuses during strong financial periods, while others said payouts were much lower than expected despite similar workloads.

According to staff, bonus decisions often rely on performance evaluations that can differ between departments and managers. Union representatives argue that a more transparent and standardized system would provide greater consistency and help employees better understand their compensation.

Union Raises Concerns About Pay Equality

The Rockstar Games Workers Union has also renewed calls for improvements in pay equity across the company, per Notebook Check.

Employees allege that Rockstar has not made sufficient progress in addressing compensation disparities, including concerns over the gender pay gap.

Union members are advocating for equal pay, clearer promotion policies, fairer bonus structures, and healthier working conditions as discussions with management continue.

'GTA 6' Launch Puts Workplace Practices in the Spotlight

The renewed labor concerns come as "GTA 6" is expected to become one of the biggest entertainment launches in history. Industry analysts anticipate record-breaking sales when the game releases, making employee working conditions an increasingly important topic alongside the game's commercial success.

Meanwhile, Sony confirmed that physical PlayStation discs wouldn't last for too long. This means that "GTA 6" is expected to come in a code-in-a-box release this time, but some retailers despise the idea for a reason.
