GSOC tells coroner's court that Garda who shot Mark Hennessy won't face discipline or prosecution

A GSOC investigator has told the coroner’s court that the Garda who shot Jastine Valdez’s killer Mark Hennessey will not face discipline or prosecution and their investigation has closed.

Senior Investigator Nicholas Harden told Coroner Myra Cullinane at Dublin Coroner’s Court that their probe was at an end.

Mr Harden told the court that the GSOC file has been furnished to the Director of Public Prosecutions and “this week” it returned with a direction of “no prosecution”.

He also said GSOC examines the case further from a discipline perspective and said that no wrong doing was found.

He said that no further action would be taken by the Garda watchdog.

The Coroner said that an inquest would now be heard.

She set the date for the hearing to December 4 next and requested all GSOC documents.

Hennessey was shot two days after he snatched the Filipino nurse in Enniskerry, Co Wicklow on May 19, 2018.

He grabbed her and put her in a car - speeding down a busy motorway, spotted by motorists as the young woman frantically begged for help.

He strangled the 24-year-old accountancy student to death and dumped her body in a lonely country laneway.

The next day brave gardai confronted the man in Cherrywood Industrial Estate in Dublin where he was shot dead by a garda who, allegedly, believed the lunatic was killing Jastine.

In the moments before he was confronted he called Nicole, his wife and declared "I've done something awful".

Her body was discovered the next day.

The Coroner is now set to hear both inquests.
