Nurses for the Ground Self-Defense Force arrived at two medical institutions in Asahikawa, Hokkaido, on Wednesday morning because there is a shortage of personnel as a result of coronavirus infection clusters that spread at the facilities.
Nurses and assistant nurses in uniform arrived at Keiyukai Yoshida Hospital in Asahikawa at about 8 a.m. on the day.
The GSDF nurses were sent as a part of a disaster dispatch, following the request from the Hokkaido prefectural government. Two teams, each comprising a nurse and four assistant nurses, will stay for about two weeks at Keiyukai Yoshida Hospital and Hokkaido Ryoikuen, a facility for the mentally and physically handicapped, to assist doctors and provide care.
As of Tuesday, 195 people at Keiyukai Yoshida Hospital and 45 at Hokkaido Ryoikuen have tested positive for the virus.
