'Growing' sinkhole appears in Bristol road

A sinkhole has appeared in a Bristol road which is growing in size, according to a concerned resident.

Thomas Robertson has reported the cavity on Belmont Road, St Andrew's to Bristol City Council and said he hopes it is repaired soon.

The 27-year-old told Bristol Live the hole was discovered by his girlfriend Amber yesterday (May 4), while she was litter picking.

"My partner Amber and I have noticed a growing amount of rubbish on the streets lately including disposable gloves, sanitiser wipes and other things you'd rather not see on the pavement," said the charity worker.

"So we've been doing regular litter picks in our area to help the Bristol Waste team.

"Amber was doing her daily tidy up yesterday when she came across a deep, dark hole.

"She came back to the house to tell me about it and said it was probably the size of a mango.

"An hour later we went to go and have another look at it together and Amber said it had grown slightly.

"It was large enough for me to stick most of my size 11 foot down so we were a little scared.

"We had a look at pictures of sinkholes on Google which made us even more worried, as these things can grow big enough to swallow up cars whole by the looks of it.

"We hope it's sorted soon as there's enough to be concerned about at the minute without having to worry about falling down a giant hole."

Thomas added that the road was recently dug up for gas pipe maintenance, so thinks this could be the cause for the sinkhole's formation.

He has reported it to the council via its website.

Bristol Live has asked Bristol City Council when the sinkhole is likely to be fixed and is awaiting a response.
