Growing respect from League One opposition is encouraging Bolton Wanderers to become stronger

Bolton Wanderers midfielder MJ Williams believes League One opposition are increasingly wary of the talent at their disposal after reflecting on Saturday's defeat to Rotherham United.

Ben Wiles struck twice in four first-half minutes to condemn Bolton to their first home defeat of the campaign.

It was a thrilling encounter, one that Ian Evatt's side were deserving of at least one goal after seeing striker Eoin Doyle hit the woodwork while George Johnston had a header disallowed for offside.

While the result was a disappointment, Williams felt there were plenty of positives for the team to take moving forward.

“We are a team that looks at itself and if we are not good enough, we’ll tell each other," said Williams.

“You can go away from that game and look at the negatives but there were positive things – we dominated the ball, we created four or five good chances.

“Football is like that, you’ll get the highs of Ipswich and now the lows against Rotherham, fans might go and have a little moan, but we just have to stick together really and look forward to Sunderland."

Paul Warne's side hold aspirations to make an immediate return to the Championship this season but Bolton were more than a match for them in large periods of the contest.

Williams believes Rotherham are just one of several having to alter their style to combat Wanderers and that in turn is giving the team confidence in their own capabilities.

“We are getting respect from teams," he added. "It is tough when they do that but it shows we are a good team.

“This team has just come down from the Championship and you can see that by the way they were managing the game, they are always fighting for the play-offs in League One.

“But so many times this season teams have changed the way they play when they come here and we have found a way through it. As the gaffer says, if they want to try and attack us, we’re happy to do that.

“This isn’t the result I wanted but we’ll bounce back. "
