Groups break lockdown rules to travel to East Lothian beaches

Police in East Lothian have been using quad bikes to find members of the public breaking lockdown rules by travelling to the beach.

Scorching weather at the weekend led to temptation for some, with community police officers carrying out high visibility patrols.

The officers visited beaches and other countryside locations.

They said: "Most people were adhering to the social distancing guidelines, however, several persons were spoken to who had unfortunately travelled substantial distances to our beaches."

One member of the public said: "Fantastic to see your presence but the coast road between Port Seton and Aberlady is horrendous."

Another added: "Keep up the good work, keep safe and keep us safe."

It comes after the East Lothian police said it was "very disappointed" to arrest three drink drivers yesterday..

And days after locals in Edinburgh trying to social distance during the coronavirus outbreak took to social media to blast the council over the city's "too narrow" pavements.

Under the council's street design guidance, which sets out the standards for the capital’s streets, the absolute minimum width of all pavements is two metres.

However, residents have been highlighting what councillor Adam McVey referred to as "pinch" spots across the city, where pavements do not meet the required width.
