Group opens fire on San Bernardino gang officers, teen suspect wounded

April 30--Three suspected gang members opened fire on two San Bernardino police officers in an unmarked car Thursday night, sparking a police chase and exchange of gunfire that left one of the suspects wounded, officials said.

The dramatic chase began about 8:40 p.m. in the 2500 block of 5th Street West, where the two gang officers were conducting surveillance and looking for suspects from another case, said police Lt. Rich Lawhead.

As the officers staked out the neighborhood, they saw three men hop a wall and decided to stop them, Lawhead said. As the officers approached and called out to the group, the men turned and opened fire on the officers before running off, Lawhead said.

The men fled south, jumped a wall and reached Foothill Boulevard, Lawhead said. One man tried to force his way into a room at the San Bernardino Motel, the second man ran to a mobile home park about a block away, and a third person -- a 17-year-old male -- was shot in the abdomen by uniformed officers who encountered him on Foothill.

Three officers opened fire during the pursuit, Lawhead said, and all three suspects were taken into custody.

An investigation is ongoing and the teen was expected to survive, police said.
