Group of squatters move into prominent Bristol building and unfurl giant banner

Squatters have moved into a prominent building in Bristol and unfurled a giant banner protesting a lack of affordable housing.

The group has taken up residence at the former Randstad office on the junction of Longmead Avenue with Gloucester Road, opposite the Sainsbury's.

A massive banner is now hanging outside the corner building, which reads: "Dear Bristol, we are the friendly squatters of this building.

"We are creating a mutual aid centre in solidarity with those in our community who are systematically silenced.

"A home is a human right, but affordable housing is non-existent.

"Our Government is Pigeon S**t.

"The city belongs to all the people that live in it.

"Let's take it back."

BristolLive understands that the squatters moved into the building about two months ago, but that the banner has only been on display for about a week.

On Saturday afternoon (February 6), a sign for a "free shop" was also being displayed outside the building, together with a sign for "free coffee and clothes".

In a Facebook post, the group behind the squat - known as 'The Pigeon S**t Collective' - said it was proud to be there.

It wrote: "We are a collective of radical mutual aid enthusiasts, and this is our letter to Bristol. This is one of many actions that will lead us to a better society.

"The public have been amazingly positive towards us and we couldn’t be happier. We really hope that you can come up and visit us, where we are running our free shop."

Google Maps Street View shows that the building was occupied by Randstad in 2008, but its lease was up for sale in 2012.
