Group of 'ordinary people' in running for Lake council

CANDIDATES: Basil Paynter and Jason Steel will run for Lake Mac council

A group of independents in the race for Lake Macquarie council are hoping to be a voice for "ordinary people".

The independent group of four will contest East Ward at the December 4 election, led by Gateshead engineer and secondary teacher Basil Paynter.

Mr Paynter, 46, has a background in management, finance, planning and in the execution of major industrial works including the commercial negotiation of contracts.

"I am passionate about social justice, fairness and equality," he said. "Working with the community, valuing their input, and representing their point of view will be the cornerstone of our approach."

Also on the same independent ticket is Jason Steel.

Mr Steel, 51, has a background in maintenance works, engineering and quality control.

"I strongly believe that successful engagement with the community includes listening carefully so that we will have a genuine appreciation of local issues and concerns," he said.
