Group of friends 'chased by two men with knives' in housing estate in Co Cork

A group of men were attacked and chased by two men with knives in a terrifying incident in Co Cork.

Thomas O'Donoghue revealed he was walking through Ballinderry Park in Mayfield on the north side of the city three weeks ago when the incident happened.

Thomas and his two friends were approached by two men asking for a cigarette, Cork Beo reports.

The group told the men that they didn’t have any, however the men did not believe them and continued to harass them.

The men then brandished knives and started to chase Thomas and his friends, however they managed to escape by running to a friend’s house in the area.

Thomas told Cork Beo: "I rang Anglesea Garda station after it happened but I didn’t want to leave my number or anything because I was worried about what would happen with people in the area.

"This kind of thing happens a lot, especially in the last week or two. Every morning when I go on Facebook I see new reports of people being mugged or attacked especially around the Mayfield area."

Local residents have taken to social media to say there have been a string of similar incidents in the Ballyvolane/Mayfield area in recent months.

In July, Gardai investigated an incident in which a 14-year-old boy says he was targeted by a youth who took a small amount of money and his phone before getting into a waiting car.

On Friday, a young man was allegedly targeted in broad daylight by four men who threatened him with a knife and took some of his possessions.

One young man posting to a local Community Watch social media group claimed himself and his friend had also been targeted by muggers recently.
