Group of Edinburgh friends use new tram extension to invent huge pub crawl

A group of friends embarked on an eight-stop Edinburgh Trams-inspired pub crawl following the highly-anticipated opening of the new route from the city centre to Newhaven.

Since the ribbon was cut before the first official passenger tram left Picardy Place last Wednesday, the regular service has proved to be popular among locals and tourists.

One group of over a dozen friends, including Newhaven resident Matthew Dekenah, decided to plan a tram-related pub crawl in anticipation of the new link and stopped off at 10 different watering holes from Ocean Terminal to the final destination of The Street, opposite the Picardy Place stop.

The 37-year-old was joined by his husband John and several other friends who all joined a WhatsApp group prior to the tram extension launching to the public and picked several of their favourite boozers closest to each stop on Leith Walk.

In total there were eight stops but 10 pubs were visited by the large group, with Matthew uploading the route and each individual pub they visited online for others to replicate if they wish.

Matthew said: "My friend Ross Chmiel actually suggested it a while ago and when we heard the official date was Wednesday was decided to go ahead with it.

"I think I put together a route on Wednesday but a week in advance we were chatting to friends to see if they'd be interested in doing it so we set up a WhatsApp group which people who were interested joined.

"We started off at the Dreadnaught in Newhaven with about ten people then around 20 in total after people dropped in and others left. The ultimate destination was The Street as we had a friend's leaving do there and it's a favourite venue for us in Edinburgh.

"The pubs were chosen based on where the tram stops were and preference. The Ocean Terminal once was particularly difficult as there is nothing there. I think if we did it again we'd skip that stop as the only option was going in and getting a drink at Zizzi but that did not feel right.

"We jumped on the tram without knowing if everyone was on so we actually left some people behind at the start- including my husband."

The full list of pubs that the group visited was Dreadnought Leith, Basils, Teuchters Landing, Moonwake Beer Co, Port O' Leith, The Foot of The Walk, The Lioness of Leith, Victoria Bar, The Joker and the Thief and finally - The Street.

Matthew and his friends ended up staying at The Street until 3am when they closed, capping off the perfect night.

"We'd probably do it again but we would have to keep it more or less the same pubs as they're closest to the tram stops. I guess we would miss out the Foot of The Walk as it was just a cheap stop.

"Overall it was quite expensive but we all just bought a tram day-ticket so we could hop on and off once we were done. I've already had a few friends say they fancy doing it again."

The map of tram stops and pubs which Matthew and his friends visited can be viewed here if others wish to replicate their triumph.
