Lytham Coastguard attended the scene but police had successfully assisted the group to safety.

The coastguard is now warning people not to swim after drinking alcohol, saying 'water and alcohol do NOT mix'.

"We've been called out twice so far today with the first callout coming through at 04.21 to reports of four intoxicated people in the water across from Blackpool Tower," a spokesperson for Lytham Coastguard said.

"Just as we were arriving on scene Blackpool Police assisted them back to safety.

"We strongly discourage people from entering the water after drinking alcohol. Water and alcohol do NOT mix.

"All jobs ended with good results, team returned back to station and we are coiled for the next emergency!

"If you see a coastal emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard!"
