A group of attackers punched and kicked a man in Sunderland before stealing his pouch of tobacco.
Police were called to Rutland Street in the early hours of January 31 after a man reported he had been robbed by a group of men.
The 30-year-old victim had been walking down the street at about 1.20am when he was approached by three men who attacked him from behind and demanded money.
The man was punched to the ground and kicked by two others, who then took his pouch of tobacco before fleeing the scene in the direction of Pallion.
The victim was taken to hospital as a precaution with injuries to his body and ribs.
An investigation has been launched and detectives have now appealed for any witnesses to come forward.
Detective constable Gavin James, of Northumbria Police, said: “This was a very serious assault and we will take robust action against anybody found to have been involved.
“This type of behaviour will not be tolerated and I am now appealing for anyone who witnessed the robbery, or who lives in the area and may have CCTV footage, to get in touch.
“Your information, however small or insignificant you feel it may be, could be absolutely crucial in ensuring those responsible for this appalling attack are brought to justice.”
