Group furious as residents warned about 'anti-racism' fundraising scam in South Dublin

A Dublin group has warned locals that their name is being associated with a scam on the southside of the city.

The people at St. Andrew's Community Centre in Rialto took to Facebook to say that fraudsters are trying to rob people out of their money by getting them to donate to a false fundraiser.

They said: "There is people cold-calling saying they are collecting for St. Andrew's Centre hip hop against racism.

"They have a sponsor sheet and a clip board and are wearing a high vis vest with an ID lanyard."

They added: "This is not us. It is a fraud. If you come in contact with this person please report it to gardai."

Speaking about a similar scam that took place down in Limerick at the start of this year, a spokesman for the Gardai advised people to do the following before handing over money to a charity.

"No genuine business or charity will mind you carrying out your own enquiries or calling An Garda Síochána.

"If a person calls to your door offering you professional trade services, selling goods or collecting for a charity and you are worried they are not bona fide, tell the caller that you never deal with people who ‘cold call’ to your door.

"Ask for a brochure or documentation so you can carry out checks and verify their credibility.

"We always want to hear if there are people in the area who may be offering goods or services that are not genuine so don't be afraid to pick up the phone and call us."
