Group from Bathgate aim to climb 30 mountains in under a year

A new group have taken on a challenge to climb 30 Munros in under a year to raise money for a children’s hospital.

Bros n Munros was started this year to raise money for Glasgow Sick Kids’ Hospital in appreciation of the care Bathgate youngster Aiden Flannigan received there.

Aiden was born in 2010 with enlarged muscles around his heart and endured a terrible first few months. He had two cardiac arrests and had to be resuscitated on numerous occasions.

His long-term prognosis was not good and at one point he was in an induced coma but he battled on and today lives the life of any normal child.

He still has complications and just last year was diagnosed with a genetic condition neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1).

Bros n Munros is being organised by Aiden’s family.

His uncle Kenneth McKenzie said: “We hope to climb the 30 munros between Febuary and September and so far we have climbed four.

“We got the idea two years ago when Aiden’s dad Sean and I did the West Highland Way and raised more money than we imagined possible so we wanted to carry it on.

“As well as the 30 munros we have also started a football tournament where six teams will play in a league format
to compete for the Bros n Munros Shield.”

The football tournament is an 11-a-side contest and is made up of six sides playing in three-team leagues before the final at Livingston United’s ground on August 26.

As well as the mountain climbing and football tournament they are also organising a ceilidh toward the end of the year.

Aiden’s dad Sean said: “We are raising money for Glasgow Sick Kids’ Hospital as the work that the doctors and nurses have done and continue to provide is priceless. The empathy and compassion that they show is second to none.

“However, we are also sharing any donations raised with Funny Lumps, a Scottish charity that helps provide support to children diagnosed with neuofibromatosis and their families.”

Donations can be made at www.justgiving.com/teams/brosnmunros or the group can be contacted on Facebook.
