Tokyo and Beijing have begun coordinating to have China's State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi visit Japan in late November to hold meetings with Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga and Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, Japanese government sources revealed.
In the meetings, the two sides will discuss issues such as cooperation to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus and the resumption of travel among business personnel between the two nations.
The Japanese side is also expected to call for China to exercise restraint over Chinese government vessels' repeated provocations in the contiguous zone and territorial waters around the Senkaku Islands in Okinawa Prefecture.
The two sides could also exchange views on the postponed state visit to Japan of Chinese President Xi Jinping, but they are not expected to discuss a specific schedule for the visit.
In response to an approach from the Chinese side, the Japanese government considered Wang's visit in October.
However, it was postponed because Japan's diplomatic schedule that month was packed with meetings in Tokyo, including the Quad meeting of the top diplomats from Japan, the United States, Australia and India, and Motegi's meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
