Groundskeeper Willie 'grew up in Edinburgh' according to The Simpsons storyline

He may have a slightly more coarse accent than ours but apparently Edinburgh can actually claim Groundskeeper Willie as their own.

Before everyone gets up in arms about The Simpsons character's Glaswegian accent - an episode which aired on Channel 4 on Tuesday evening revealed that Willie did in fact grow up, or indeed spend a significant amount of time in Edinburgh.

Let us present our findings, because this isn't even the first time that Groundskeeper Willie has alluded to his Edinburgh roots.

In Tuesday 12 January's episode at 6pm on Channel 4, 'The President Wore Pearls', which first aired in 2003, Willie speaks to Principal Skinner and Superintendent Chalmers about strikes in coal mines 'back in Edinburgh' after Willie turns down Skinner's order to turn his hose on protesting students.

According to Willie, nobody made it out alive, 'Not even Willie'.

If that isn't enough evidence for you, in Season 10 Episode 15 Groundskeeper Willie tries to tell a joke about golfers from North and South Edinburgh, in the Springfield Elementary talent show.

Okay so there's a slight issue - the character said in a 2012 episode of the long-running US show: "I want to clear up one thing about me.

"Everyone thinks I’m from Edinburgh or Glasgow, and the truth is I’m from Kirkwall in Orkney."

And one more thing: his parents were later introduced in 'Monty Can't Buy Me Love', and lived near Loch Ness, Inverness.

Our theory: Groundskeeper Willie may be from Kirkwall, or simply just born there, but he was made in Edinburgh.

Case closed.
