If you’re like me, you love the idea of the Battlefield series more than the execution. I’ve just never cared for the gunplay in DICE’s games, whether we’re talking about Battlefield or Star Wars: Battlefront, which I like even less in that regard.
So I’m excited to try out the same basic format but with Call Of Duty instead of Battelfield gunplay and mechanics. This is entirely a personal preference thing, and I completely understand if you think that’s crazy and prefer Battlefield. For my part, I’m just curious to see how this new ‘Ground War’ mode will play out.
Basically it’s a five-point Domination mode set on a huge map with a ton of players. When GameInformer played it—and reported on it as part of the current issue’s cover story—the mode was locked at 64 players, but Activision has already stated it will be 100+ at launch.
There will also be vehicles such as helicopters and APCs, making it even more like Battlefield. Here’s GameInformer’s Dan Tack on the new mode:
“Choppers whiz by above while players spawn into secured locations and even APCs on the move, planning their next cap point. Vehicles are player-piloted. Cover is everywhere in the side alleys and between buildings, but watch yourself carefully if you’re planning to trek the spacious roads, as they provide little protection and can turn into everything from small scale-skirmishes on the fly around upturned cars to sniper massacres. You’re incredibly exposed in these areas, so judicious use of smoke, fast movement from cover to cover, and working as incursion teams are all critical to success if you plan to spend any time on these expanses of concrete.”
That sounds . . . really fun, actually. I’ve always wondered what Battlefield would be like with Call of Duty shooting, and now we get to find out. I’m glad this is the direction Infinity Ward took instead of yet another battle royale, though I wouldn’t be at all disappointed if they decided to add that down the road. So far, at least, this game sounds much more my speed than Black Ops 4 and its Blackout battle royale.
Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare releases on PC, Xbox One and PS4 on October 25th, 2019.
