Gross video shows what happens if you leave fungal nail infections for a year

Foot specialists had their work cut out when a woman who hadn't cut her toenails for over a year needed urgent treatment when the became horrendously overgrown.

The woman's thick, yellow nails took around 20 minutes to hack back and one had grown to a staggering 4cms in length and had trapped the toe next to it.

Despite the grim job ahead, the cheery podiatrist Dr Binh Nguyen playfully dubbed the biggest toenail a 'little toe hat' as he chuckled with the patient.

The footage shows Dr Nguyen, who runs a clinic in Tampa, Florida, use a pair of heavy-duty cutters as he begins to remove the toenails one by one.

When he asks her how she is doing she replies: "I'm fine, it's you people who aren't!"

He laughed and replied: "I'm ok, imagine being a foot doctor getting grossed out by toes.

It turns out that the woman had a very severe fungal nail infection.

Fungal nail infections aren't common but they are often easily preventable.

They come about when the sufferer's feet are constantly warm and damp - the ideal environment for fungus to grow.

Hot, sweaty feet in trainers are a cocktail for disaster when it comes to this infection.

The best tips to avoid dodgy feet are to try to 'air' them out as much as you can by wearing open-toed shoes and removing socks and shoes when you are comfortable to do so.

Personal hygiene is also an important one, ensuring regular washing of the feet and clean socks every day.

Athlete's foot should also be treated, as well as fungal nail infections.

A pharmacist will be able to help but for more severe cases a podiatrist would be the best option.
