Groom's last words to wife as he dies just week after marrying in hospital

A heartbroken bride's new husband has died just days after they married in hospital.

Petr Chyba lost his battle with cancer on Friday night, at the Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital, in Grimsby, wife Marie announced.

At their wedding ceremony in a hospital room, Petr and Marie exchanged makeshift rings - his an old key ring and her, the silver ring from a perfume bottle top.

Guests wore masks and gloves due to the coronavirus emergency and some nurses came in on their day off to witness the ceremony.

Hospital staff had arranged a surprise reception for the loving couple, which was supported by local businesses.

Marie and Petr, both 56, made the decision to get married on Wednesday, March 25 and the ceremony was held on Friday, March 27.

That meant the rings they had ordered did not arrive in time, so they exchanged the perfume bottle top and key ring instead.

Marie told Grimsby Live her ring arrived the day after Petr died in Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital.

Marie said: "He was peaceful and so strong to the end. We held hands and and the last words he spoke were 'I love you'.

"He was the bravest, strongest, kindest, generous and most loving man I would ever have hoped to meet, let alone marry and I am truly heartbroken."

After the wedding Marie said: "Out of everything that's happening in the world currently our marriage is at the top of the happy pile."

She said: "It is such a shame the  coronavirus has restricted so many things, quite rightly.

"But in this case his ring did not arrive in time. Normally you could just go to the shop in  Grimsby and buy a ring.

"Now we cannot even give him the send off he deserves because of the restrictions. I know it is necessary but it is so sad because the place would have been packed to the rafters."

Marie said she is still struggling to come to terms with her loss.

In 2017 Petr was diagnosed with neuroendocrine lung cancer, a potentially treatable but incurable cancer.

He underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy and the treatment finished in June 2018.

Petr became unwell around Christmas time and on New Year's Eve it was found the cancer had spread to his brain stem.

The high-pressure water operator, who moved to the UK from the Czech Republic 17 years ago, underwent stereotactic radiotherapy to the brain in late January, but unfortunately he developed further complications a week ago and was admitted to Amethyst ward.

He and Marie were married in a room next to the ward.
