Groom's fury at best man after 'out of line' joke in speech leaves him red-faced

Some wedding speeches can be so beautiful they move you to tears, but if you find yourself crying during a best man's speech, it's usually from laughter.

That's the tactic one best man on Reddit tried to use when he recently attended his friend's wedding, after he found a joke online that he was convinced would leave everyone in stitches.

The man explained it was his friend's second wedding and he had also been the best man at the first, so he thought it would be a good idea to poke fun at his pal's failed first marriage.

And while the joke got a few laughs, including from the bride, the groom was less than impressed.

The best man said: "I was recently the best man at my friend's second wedding, and I was also the best man at his first.

"I saw this joke online and it made me laugh, so I stole it and for my opening speech I said, 'Right well ... Welcome back everyone', which got more than a few laughs, especially from the bride, who seemed to find it hilarious."

After finishing his speech and thinking everything had gone according to plan, the best man was approached by his friend - who slammed him for his "out of line" joke that had "embarrassed" him in front of his wedding guests.

He added: "Everything went well, the speech was over and done with. But later on, after a few drinks, my friend began to rip me a new a**hole by telling me I was out of line with that kind of joke, and how I'd embarrassed him.

"He claimed it wasn't funny and said I shouldn't have brought his last marriage into this. I mean, a best man's speech will always be more jokey than anything and beyond that, it was fairly tame. That was the only reference to his last marriage in the entire speech ... was I really that out of line?"

Commenters on the Reddit post were split, with some agreeing that the best man's joke was in poor taste, and others insisting the quip was "harmless".

One person wrote: "You should have asked him if he was cool with you bringing up his previous marriage during your speech. Since you didn't, you're the a**hole."

But another tried to see it from both sides, adding: "I'd say no a**holes here. It was a harmless, fun joke that made people laugh, but the groom is entitled to feeling what he feels."

While a third said: "But was it harmless? It seemingly upset the groom. Maybe he's very sad his first marriage failed. Maybe the divorce was hard on him. Maybe he suffered.

"We don't know, so we cant assume it's all fun and games to joke about him trying again. This is very much a case by case basis, and in this case, it was obviously a poor choice."
