Grolsch lager will no longer be sold in supermarkets

Shoppers will no longer be able to find Grolsch lager bottles in UK supermarkets.

The Dutch beer, recognisable from its distinctive green glass bottles and swig-top lids, has experienced a decline in popularity over the last few years with supermarket sales.

Its owner, the international Asahi group, confirmed that its brewing deal with its UK manufacturer has come to an end for good.

Speaking to The Grocer, a spokesperson said: "After 35 years, Asahi and Molson Coors have agreed to end the joint venture agreements for the Grolsch brand in the UK and Ireland. As a result, Grolsch is no longer available in the UK and Ireland."

When asked if the lager will ever return to UK and Ireland stores, the spokesperson declined to comment.

The drink has been 'delisted' from Tesco and Asda stores, so it's no longer available online or in stores.

It's thought that the lager decreased in popularity due to the rise of craft beers and lagers, cheaper rivals and lower alcohol alternatives.

The Grolsch Brewery was founded in 1515 Groenlo, the Netherlands. At the time the town was known as  Grolle, which is the inspiration behind the lager's name.
