Gritters out in EK as temperatures drop to two degrees overnight

Gritters were out and about East Kilbride last night as the winter starts to come in.

Temperatures dropped to as low as two degrees over the course of the night.

Gordon Mackay, Head of Roads and Transportation Services for South Lanarkshire Council, said: “With a forecast of heavy hoar frost, and, with road surface temperatures predicted to fall below freezing, our roads team treated the majority of our priority routes on Tuesday night.

"The council’s official winter stand-by period is from October to March, but we, of course, treat roads as and when forecasts dictate.”

The councils website states: "We make sure, as far as possible, that main roads are safe and clear to use.

"But, its not practical or affordable to grit all roads and footpaths. No council can do this.

"We grit about 52% of our roads when ice or snow is forecast; which is more than the Scottish average of 47%.

"We also grit main footpaths in town centres when ice or snow is forecast.

"If there has been a lot of snow we will clear and grit other main footpaths.

"Generally, though footpaths in residential areas will not be gritted."

The council have a fleet of seven gritters, twoi mini-gritters, one snowblower, 19 footway tractors and five loaders in preparation for extreme winter weather.
