'Gritter Thunberg' tops hilarious names for new South Lanarkshire gritting fleet

Pun-loving South Lanarkshire school kids have named a new fleet of gritters – and leading the entries is ‘Gritter Thunberg’.

The hilariously-named ice gritter is named after 16-year-old environmental activist Greta Thunberg, and joins other gritters named after celebs, like Lew-ice Capaldi and Spread Sheeran.

South Lanarkshire Council asked local school children for suggestions and were inundated with witty entries. Other funny names for the weather-busting trucks include Sir Grits-a-Lot, Darth Spreader, Snowel Gallagher and Gritallica.

The fleet of gritters can be tracked via an interactive map, so you can see which roads will be ice-free in South Lanarkshire.

A council spokesman said: "Our pupils chose the name and I think that is a reflection on all the good work Greta has been doing.

"It really struck a chord with our children so that's why they picked the name. There were a few to vote from, but Gritter Thunberg was the most popular."

The other winning names will be revealed officially at the end of this month.

On December 11, Time magazine named Thunberg Person of the Year. She is the first person born in the 21st century to be named Person of the Year, and the youngest individual Time Person of the Year.
