Gritter 'stranded with lorries' on major Scots road as snow blasts country

A gritter appeared to be 'stranded' alongside a number of HGVs on the busy A9 as snow blasted parts of Scotland.

Forecasters warned snow and 'Arctic air' would hit Scotland this week after the country enjoyed mild conditions over the New Year.

The Met Office issued three yellow weather warnings for snow, ice and wind beginning on Monday afternoon.

The A9 has been hit with some of the worst weather as drivers faced blizzard conditions on the busy road.

One driver revealed traffic was at a 'standstill' at around 2pm on Tuesday as they told others to 'avoid the A9 southbound'.

Inverness South councillor Andrew Jarvie also took to social media to warn locals of the disruption as the snow wreaked havoc with the travel network.

He confirmed cops had shut down the A9 temporarily at Drumossie on Tuesday around 2:30pm, while vehicles had become stuck nearby.

The councillor later shared a picture showing multiple stranded lorries 'blocking' the A9 at Daviot and reported that a gritter had also become stuck.

He said: "A9 also blocked northbound at Daviot by stranded HGVs."

He added: "Avoid the A9 in general if you can. The northbound carriageway is blocked at Daviot too, even the gritter is stuck!"

Traffic Scotland issued a further warning at 6pm on Tuesday evening, writing: "A YELLOW weather warning remains in place this afternoon for SNOW and ICE affecting much of the north.

"Affecting the A9 around Slochd/ Daviot and the A96 around Keith and Foudland."
