Gritter overturns on South West road as stark travel warning issued

A gritter fleet overturning in the South West has prompted a warning over driving on icy roads.

Devon County Council has shared a photograph of the flipped vehicle for the benefit of drivers who may be planning a non-essential trip.

The incident happened on Holne Road, Buckfastleigh, after ice formed overnight on January 23, Devon Live reports.

In a tweet at 9.19am today (January 24), the council wrote: "Significant risk of ice on untreated and treated roads this morning and through the day.

"Picture shows one of our gritter fleet overturned on the Holne Road - driver OK.

"Avoid travel unless absolutely essential, do not travel to find snow, and stick to the Covid-19 guidance."

Snow has fallen across much of the South West today, amid Met Office warnings over the safety risks of travelling on icy roads.
