Gritter bursts into flames on M74 as fireball brings motorway standstill

A gritter burst into an explosive fireball bringing the M74 to a standstill last night.

A picture from the scene shows the vehicle completely engulfed in flames on the motorway between J6 for Hamilton and J7 for Larkhall.

Emergency services raced to the scene at around 8.40pm last night.

The incident saw the road closed southbound to traffic for a short period of time and subsequently reduced to one lane for a number of hours as a result.

Fire crews left the scene at 9.34pm when the fire was extinguished before the road fully reopened at around midnight.

No injuries have been reported as a result of the blaze.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 8.40pm on Friday, 15 January, officers were called to a report of a gritter on fire on the M74 southbound, near junction 6.

"Officers attended with other emergency services and there was no report of any injuries."
