"Grinch" thief caught on CCTV stealing Christmas ornaments from outside Gateshead home

This is the moment a man was caught on CCTV stealing Christmas ornaments from outside a home in Tyneside.

For around six years, Evelyn Frame has been putting up stunning decorations at her home on Woodbine Terrace, in Pelaw, Gateshead.

Her annual displays are loved by families in the area, including children who come by to take a look.

But on November 14, Evelyn was shocked to find that a man had come into her garden with a bag and stuffed it with a number of the ornaments before making off.

The 61-year-old, who has five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, said: "I was on my way to work when I noticed that a number of things were missing from the garden.

"I told my husband, who checked the CCTV, and it showed that someone had come into the garden on November 14 with a shopping bag. This man went round and just helped himself, filling the bag up.

"I checked the time and it was around 8.20pm. I would have been at home at that time and he was there outside just stealing our ornaments."

Evelyn, an NHS worker, said the incident was upsetting for the family as well as other residents in the area who like seeing her decorations.

"I have been putting decorations up for five to six years and I do it because so many people get pleasure out of it," she said.

"A lot of children as well as elderly people come to have a look and it puts a smile on their face. That's why I do this.

"But I felt a bit sick and disappointed when the theft took place.

"I just can't understand why someone would do it and what they would do with the ornaments. It was upsetting for so many people."

The theft was reported to the police who are investigating the incident. Evelyn also put up a note outside her home informing people what had happened and urging anyone with information to get in touch.

Since then, Evelyn has received a letter from a seven-year-old girl saying she liked the decorations and was disappointed that someone had stolen the ornaments. And another stranger left a gift of a Santa Claus with a shaking belly for the family.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "Shortly before 1.45pm on November 20, police received a report of the theft of some Christmas ornaments from a garden at an address on Woodbine Terrace, Pelaw.

"The offence is believed to have occurred at some point overnight, between November 14 and November 15. Enquiries are ongoing and anyone who has any information is asked to contact police on 101 quoting log 536 201119."
