Grimsby fish smoker wins top prize at the Great British Food Awards

A Grimsby fish smoker has been presented with one of the industry's top awards for its artisan food.

Grimsby Traditional Fish Smoker Alfred Enderby has been named the overall winner in the fish and seafood category at this year's Great British Food Awards.

The business, which is one of the smallest smokehouses in the country, was presented with the award after wowing the judges with its traditional smoked haddock.

The company is still privately owned by Patrick Salmon and holds PGI (protected geographical) status.

Mr Salmon said: “This is fantastic news for our team. We are a truly traditional smoker who have been operating on the Grimsby Docks for over 100 years. We source our haddock fresh from sustainable North Atlantic fisheries and take great care with our refined cold smoking method."

He added: “This, and recent awards, has seen an increase in our online sales and shows the popularity of not just our smoked haddock, but all the products we produce. We are genuinely just doing what we love.

"We put our hearts into it and have become masters in our own right over the years with a great reputation particularly, with chefs and restaurants, for the highest quality and tastiest smoked fish. Hopefully, this national recognition will make more people of all ages want to buy it and try it.”

The fish and seafood category was judged by restaurateur, chef, and author Mitch Tonks.

Commenting on Alfred Enderby's award winning haddock, Mr Tonks said: “This is iconic smoked haddock. I really felt I was eating something unique – moist fish flakes with a comforting level of smoke and salt of which were in perfect balance with each other. Smoked haddock of this quality deserves its recognition.”

The smokehouse's Great British Food Award comes hot on the heel's of its sliced smoked salmon earning the highest possible accolade at the 2020 Guild of Fine Food Awards last month. It was also named in the Times Top 50 Food & Drink products.
