Grim nicotine-stained walls cleaned after previous owners smoked every day for 30 years

A shocking before and after transformation shows grim nicotine-stained walls scrubbed clean after being left for three decades.

A couple bought a 1960s house during lockdown which has been left unchanged since it was built, with the previous owners heavy smokers who lit up every day in the living room with the windows shut.

Uploading a clip to Tik Tok on @wiltshire.renovators, the pair, who are renovating the property, removed 30 years of brown grime from thousands of cigarettes on the walls that had coated the paint.

Amid terrible smells of stale smoke, the stains were so bad that the nicotine had turned the original blue paint almost black, leaving patches where photo frames were once hung.

In the video, they use several coats of cleaning products mixed with home remedies and scrub as the nicotine grease melts off in horrifying brown streaks.

They explained: "the room was smoked in for 30 plus years with the windows shut."

The cleaning fanatics first sprayed the walls with Elbow Grease followed by washing up liquid and bicarbonate of soda diluted in water.

Scrubbing between layers, they then did a wash over with bleach which they left to activate.

Finally, the couple wiped the wall with white vinegar in a bid to neutralise any leftover smells.

They revealed the dramatic transformation of the room, showing the brown and stained walls gone and the original blue paint returned to its former glory.

Nicotine and tar from cigarettes have the power to stain more than just your teeth. They seep into the walls and coat it with grease, which is not that easy to remove if it's been left for a long time.

Houses inhabited by smokers may have brown or yellow stains or streaks on the walls from years of cigarette smoke.

The stains often need to be completely cleaned off and removed when renovating before being painted over or plastered.
