Grim interactive map shows what would happen if a nuclear bomb hit your area in Scotland

An interactive map has estimated the devastation a nuclear weapon may cause if one were to land in your town of city.

The ‘What Happens in a Bomb Blast’ map was created by Alex Wellerstein, who is a historian of nuclear weapons and an assistant professor of Science and Technology studies at the Stevens Institute of Technology in America.

With this tool, Scots are able to see the potential impact that a 300 kiloton nuclear warhead after it crash landed in their local area.

It covers the devastation from the fireball, radiation, the shock wave and the heat from the blast.

If a nuclear bomb were to land in the heart of Glasgow, then it would impact people within a radius of 48.54 square km - going as far north as Bishopbriggs and as south as Cathcart.

The app estimates that 138,398 people would lose their lives, with 210,192 expected to be injured following impact.

All of the blast size calculations and the associated casualties are provided by Professor Wellerstein’s application.

If the same missile was to land on Edinburgh Castle, then it have an impact on people as far west as Corstorphine and as east as Portobello - with the same radius in place.

It predicts that 173,531 people would lose their lives and the blast would injure a further 132, 207.

Outrider, the organisation that has published the interactive map, hopes to highlight the horrifying impact that nuclear warfare could have on entire areas of the country.

The group writes: “We envision a world where people live without fear of nuclear annihilation or climate-induced catastrophe.

“We can make the world safer and more secure if we work together.”
