Grieving son shares "horrible memories" of finding mum and sister dead in burger van

A devastated son who tragically found his mum and sister dead inside his own burger van says he now plans to get rid of it because of the 'horrible memories'.

Tyla Wanstall discovered mum-of-four Leah Churchill and teenage sister Brooke Wanstall laying motionless on the floor when he went to open his Meat 'N' Greet food van on the morning of February 14.

It is understood the pair had been decorating the vehicle as surprise for his 26th birthday when they suffered fatal carbon monoxide poisoning from generator fumes.

The heartbroken new father-of-one said later that they may have started the petrol generator - which is stored inside the van at night for security reasons - to keep themselves warm while not realising the danger.

Now, Mr Wanstall has vowed to continue to operate his business to honour his late mum and sister's memory by getting rid of the current van and starting business again in a new one.

The father-of-one, who lives in the Kent market town of Faversham, said: "Meat 'N' Greet has to go, of course, because it just has horrible memories.

"But I have to keep going and earning a living for my family, so I’m getting another burger van.

"Mum always wanted to help me in the business and would not have wanted me to just give up.

"I know I might suffer flashbacks but I have to throw myself into it and give it a go, and hopefully people who come will have a cup of tea to remember her and my little sister."

Mr Wanstall says he has not yet decided whether he will stay at the current site, which is the entrance to the Benacre Riding Stables in Whitstable, or move to a different location.

A balloon release on Herne Bay seafront on the day after the pair's bodies were found last week was attended by hundreds of people, as well as Leah's other two children Ocean, 23, and 12-year-old Sonny.

Emotional friends and family listened to music loved by the mother and daughter during the emotional event while toasting them with Leah's favourite drink of vodka.

More than £17,000 has now been raised from members of the public for the mother and daughter's joint funeral (SWNS)

More than £17,000 has now been raised from members of the public for their joint funeral. Tyla says a date for the service is yet to be fixed, but insists they intend to give his mum and 'beautiful baby sister' the perfect send-off.

He added: "All I know is that we’re dreading it. But one of the things helping to keep us going is all the incredible kindness and support we have had from everyone, and the amazing amount of money that has so far been raised"

Any money left over from the fundraiser will be used to support his younger brother and getting "things back on track" with his late mother's house, Tyla said.

An inquest into the deaths is expected to open in the near future, though investigations will not delay the pair's funeral.
