Grieving sister of tragic Ruth Maguire calls for barriers to be erected at Carlingford Lough in Co Louth

The grieving sister of tragic Ruth Maguire has called for barriers to be erected at Carlingford Lough in Co Louth, in the interests of public safety.

Young mum, Ruth, 30, drowned after she she went missing from a hen party in the town on March 16.

Speaking after a candlelit vigil held to remember Ruth in Carlingford on Monday night, Rachel Wilkinson called for the safety measures to be put in place.

Belfast native Rachel told LMFM: "I think having a barrier there and closing it at night time so no young ones can walk down makes sense.

"I've a small child, who is three and light as a feather so one gush of wind and he'd be in the water."

She added: "It's not just for young ones who are coming down after having a few too many, it's for everyone."

During the service, local parish priest Father Brian Mac An Raois said prayers for Ruth's family "in this time of shock, loss and pain".

Friends of Ruth launched a fundraising page to support her family in the wake of the tragedy which has raised over €6,500 to date.

Pal Leighann Flood said: “Ruth was the most loving, hardworking and caring mother to her three beautiful children Tyler, Lydia and Oliver.

"Along with her fiancé Jim, they worked tirelessly to give their children the best that they possibly could in life.

"From gymnastics, Irish dancing, football and local GAA Ruth made it her life to make sure the children attended as much as possible so that they would get the most out of their childhood.

“We have set this page up to give the children (and Jim) as much help as possible so that they may continue on with all their extracurriculars during this heartbreaking time in their young lives.”
