Grieving Scots footballer Shaun Rooney clocked speeding at 98mph

A footballer was clocked speeding at almost 100 miles per hour as he raced home from a match to comfort his grieving father.

Defender Shaun Rooney, 23, told a court he had been playing in the wake of his grandfather’s death to cancer.

St Johnstone’s new signing, who was with Inverness Caley Thistle at the time, was clocked doing 98mph in his Mercedes A180 on the Inverness to Perth A9 at Moulinearn on December 7.

Rooney, of Bellshill, Lanarkshire, said he realised he could be viewed as “a role model” because he is a professional footballer and apologised for speeding.

He admitted the offence by letter at Dundee’s Justice of the Peace Court and was fined £540, which he was allowed to pay at £25 per week.

Rooney, who told the court he earned £30,000 a year, escaped a ban but Sheriff John Rafferty imposed four points on his licence.
